S.O.S.--for Single Source Document Delivery

You need it delivered fast and you don't even have time to verify the order--what do you do? Try the UnCover S.O.S. service--Single Order Source--which premiered on October 1.

The UnCover S.O.S. service allows anyone to order articles from UnCover's more than 16,000 journals using the method of choice--fax, phone, or e-mail. Article citations need not be verified in the UnCover database before the order is placed. UnCover S.O.S. staff will verify the citation and place the order on behalf of the customer. Requesters will be notified of the article order number within two hours. Notification of any orders which cannot be placed through UnCover will also be provided within two hours. Articles ordered through the S.O.S. service will be charged at US$10 per article (plus copyright and fax surcharge if applicable). A parallel service will be offered to customers outside of North America through the BH Blackwell office in Oxford, England.

Phase II of UnCover S.O.S., targeted for release in the spring, will allow customers to order any type of material via fax, e-mail, or telephone. If UnCover cannot supply the material, the request will automatically be passed on to a partner supplier for fulfillment.

An S.O.S. profile must be established with UnCover prior to using the service. This profile includes the fax number, phone number, and billing information for those using the service, enabling UnCover S.O.S. staff to efficiently place orders. Once the S.O.S. profile has been established, orders may be placed by fax at (303) 758-7547, by telephone at (800) 369-8745, or via Internet e-mail at sos@carl.org.

Donna Snyman, who has been with the UnCover Company since 1991, has been promoted to UnCover S.O.S. service coordinator. For more information on the service, contact Donna by fax at (303) 758-7547, by telephone at (800) 369-8745, or via Internet e-mail at sos@carl.org.

Reveal by Fax

UnCover will now accept article orders from Reveal tables of contents by fax. Simply print out the e-mail message which contains the table of contents information, circle the article you would like to order, and fax it to the UnCover office at (303) 758-7547. UnCover staff will place your order and respond with the order number within two hours. To use the Reveal table of contents to place an order, your UnCover user profile must contain your fax number and billing information. Articles ordered through Reveal--either by reply e-mail or by fax--will be delivered at the $8.50 rate. For more information, send e-mail to uncover@carl.org, or call the UnCover office at (303) 758-3030.

Enhanced Cost Center Reporting Available

Are you interested in tracking the number of articles ordered for a particular project within your company? Does your CFO want to see your monthly invoice sorted by department and price of the article? If so, you may want to take advantage of UnCover's enhanced financial reporting option.

UnCover now offers detailed Cost Center Reporting. This option is available to customers with either a deposit account or a billing account with UnCover. In addition to the information already provided on the monthly reports (e.g., article order number, a single cost center message, routing message, and recipient of the fax) the Cost Center Reporting option will allow you to store additional data fields and to sort and sub-sort reports by these added fields.

Customers can store up to seven additional data elements, each with a field length of up to 40 characters. These data elements may be used for information such as an internal department number, project number, cost center number, federal grant number, or the name of an academic department. Reports may then be generated using the additional data elements as key sorting points. For example, instead of the standard sort by article order number, a report could be sorted by research department, then subsorted within each research department by project number, then by the name of the requester. All of the information included in the standard reports will be retained and provided as part of the cost center report.

Cost center reports will automatically be provided in paper format. Files of the reported data can also be requested in comma-delimited format and provided on diskette or by FTP for manipulation into the institution's own format.

A one-time fee of $100 will be charged for setting up the Cost Center Reporting. Customized Gateway customers may request gateway-specific online prompting for their data elements at no additional charge. If you choose the Cost Center Reporting option, a representative from UnCover will contact you for details concerning your reporting needs. For more information, send e-mail to uncover@carl.org or call the UnCover office at (303) 758-3030.

UnCover Contributor's Forum Luncheon Held at ALA

Teresa Mullins, Database Development Coordinator

The Fourth UnCover Contributors' Forum luncheon was held at the ALA Annual Conference in Miami on June 25, 1994. Representatives from seven contributing libraries and the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries were present. This summer's meeting had an international focus, with an emphasis on UnCover's place in a world-wide document delivery market.

The featured guest speaker was Mary Jackson, ARL Visiting Program Officer, who spoke on the role of document delivery in a world-wide environment. She also described the NAILDD (North American Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery) Project, which promotes the establishment of technical standards and development of management software to facilitate document delivery.

Martha Whittaker, UnCover Company General Manager, brought everyone up-to-date on new UnCover features, including UnCover Complete and Reveal. Both of these new services, especially the Reveal e-mail table of contents alert service, have introduced many new clients to UnCover and have greatly increased awareness of UnCover services throughout the world.

Martha also reported on her visit to the National Library of Australia. The NLA began delivery of articles on June 1, 1994, immediately establishing itself as a strong contributor. Brenda Bailey, Marketing and Client Liaison, described her trip to Japan in March 1994, to work with new marketing partner, Maruzen Co., Ltd. who handles Japanese customers.

Teresa Mullins, Database Development Coordinator, discussed the addition of non-English language titles to the database. In the past, non-English language coverage was limited to those journals which were at least partially in English. UnCover is now planning to add titles in Spanish, Italian, French and German. The possibility of adding transliterated Japanese materials at a later date is also being explored.
