LIGHT SCATTERING SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS - CHARACTERIZATION OF MACROMOLECULAR SYSTEMS

Teaching by: George Fytas and Apostolos Rizos

Outline:

The expose to this scattering technique will require basic knowledge in Polymer and Colloid science and understanding of the physical principles of light scattering. An one semester course will cover :

  1. Fundamentals of Polymer Science (60 hours).
  2. This will include:Conformation of flexible and rigid polymers in different physical states, thermodynamics (phase diagram) of multi component systems, polymer dynamics, mechanical properties and basic principles of colloids.

  3. Physical Principles of Radiation Scattering (50 hours).
  4. Molecular theory of isotropic and anisotropic light scattering, static form - and structure- factor, translational, rotational diffusion and dynamic structure factor.

  5. Polymer Characterization by Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (50 hours).
  6. Sample preparation, size and molecular weight determination, mobility in solution and interdiffusion in blends.
